The Alex Lewis Trust is a disabled persons trust dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for Alex, a quadruple amputee, by providing essential support and resources.

The Trust enables Alex to inspire independence and resilience through innovative solutions and community engagement.

2013

Alex Survives

Alex survives Strep A which leads to a quadruple amputation and facial disfigurement.

2014

Trust is Founded

The Alex Lewis Trust is founded. The Trust enabled Alex to carry out his first public speaking engagement at Warminster School and begin filming of ‘The Extraordinary Case of Alex Lewis’. The bull logo is adopted.

2015

First Prosthetics Purchased

Alex's first end user led PhD research project at Imperial College London with Sam Wilson. A hand cycle and sports prosthetics are purchased. Alex carries out 15,000ft tandem sky dive over Salisbury to raise awareness.

2016

Awareness Campaigns Begin

The Trust enables Alex to become the first quadruple amputee to kayak around the Southern tip of Greenland with The Pilgrim Bandits. The university research network is extended and ‘The Extraordinary Case of Alex Lewis’ is released on C4.

2017

Wild Wheelchairs Project Set Up

Alex becomes the first quadruple amputee to kayak 300km along the Orange River in South Africa. He carries out over 20 public speaking engagements and co-founds Imperial College Spin Out with SERG Technologies and The Wild Wheelchairs Project.

2018

Collaboration for AT Advancement

A local philanthropist provides funding for a collaboration with Southampton University for end user led research, this became known as The Wild Wheelchairs Project. The world’s first solar assisted battery powered 4 wheeled hand cycle is designed and built by a team of Masters students. Karen Betts carries out Alex’s facial tattooing finishing the transformation of his face. The university network is extended and the number of student projects increase. Alex starts public speaking internationally and begins filming Alex Lewis Mountain.

2019

Alex Lewis Mountain Film Released

Alex successfully summits the highest mountain in Ethiopia using the world's first solar assisted battery powered 4 wheel hand cycle. He co-creates knowledge sharing university networks between Ethiopia and the UK. The Wild Wheelchairs Project enables the enhancement of an existing wheelchair facility in Bahir Dar which now provides AT devices to Northern Ethiopia at affordable prices.

2020

Project Limitless Founded

Alex co-creates Project Limitless and raises over £600,000. Our local philanthropist funds the development of a second 4 wheeled hand cycle. This one is solar assisted in order that it can cross a desert.

2021

Support During Covid

Despite Lockdown, Alex is able to support a number of student design projects virtually and continue Project Limitless.

2022

Namib Desert Challenge

Alex is supported to become the first quadruple amputee to cross the Namib Desert on a wheelchair using an e-powered wheelchair attachment. Sponsors fund the repurposing of a Flying 15 sail boat into a rowing boat for Alex’s next challenge, The Pig 2 Pig.

2023

Support for Ukraine

Alex becomes the first quadruple amputee to hand cycle 220km around Salisbury Plain over 19hrs non stop. He travels to Ukraine to set out a model to supply upper limb prosthetics to injured service personnel and civilians. Alex Lewis Mountain is screened at The Beverley Hills Film Festival in Hollywood.

2024

Pig 2 Pig Challenge

Alex is supported in the Pig 2 Pig initiative during which he becomes the first quadruple amputee to off shore row 350 miles across the South of England. He raises £30,000 for charity.

2024

FLOAT Becomes Registered Charity

The For the Love of Assistive Technology Foundation (FLOAT) is founded and receives charitable status.

2025

Project Limitless UK Channel Challenge

FLOAT Foundation organises sponsored lane swim at Tooting Bec Lido on 22nd June in aid of Project Limitless UK.

2025

The Great River Race

Rowing race covering 21.6 miles from Millwall to Richmond on 20th September. Sponsorship required to help Alex take part and raise money for the FLOAT Foundation.

2026

ALNAR

Alex Lewis North Atlantic Row takes place in June. Alex requires sponsorship to complete the world record breaking 3000 mile row in aid of the FLOAT Foundation.

2026

E-Row Exped

Sponsorship required to help Alex develop the world's first e-powered rowing boat at Kings College London.

The Funds

Donations, fundraising activity and support comes from individuals who visit the Alex Lewis Trust website, those who meet Alex and hear his inspiring story, and people who learn about him through media coverage and public appearances.

The Allocation

Funds are spent of whatever Alex needs to enable him to live his life; this could be a specially adapted wheelchair, prosthetics, or home modifications to improve accessibility and independence.
